CALL TO ARTISTS, FLOWER POWERJan 5, 10:00amArt Center Morro BayCALL TO ARTIST

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present, FLOWER POWER.

Flower Power is a slogan emblematic from the counter culture of the 1960’s. During the Summer of Love, flowers became powerful symbols of peace, a concept plucked from Buddhist art.

More than merely decorative, floral imagery has helped convey ideas from the refined to the revolutionary for thousands of years. Flowers in contemporary art are connected to particular cultural legacies but are also open to new interpretations, moored to the past yet provoking questions about our future.

Flowers offer decorative appeal, symbolic and healing values, as well as ways of thinking about a wide range of topics—the natural environment in which we live, the communities we build, and the commodities we buy. Artists may enter

Artists are invited to submit up to (3) 2D or wall hung artworks in all media. In addition, artists are encouraged to submit to both featured 3D themes:

THE ROLE OF THE VASE featuring vases. Artists may submit up to three vases.

THE ART OF IKEBANA will feature work of botanical artists, green professionals, flower growers and floral designers. One complete arrangement incorporating living flowers or plants will be accepted per artist. Live flowers and plants will be used, Floral arrangements need to last and be replaced by the artist when they wilt.

This exhibition will embrace the diversity of florals through 2 dimensional interpretations, from scientific illustration, abstract, photorealism to large free style creations in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, photography, digital media and mixed media. In addition, 3 dimensional artwork will include ceramic, glass, wood and floral.

More than merely decorative, floral imagery has helped convey ideas from the refined to the revolutionary for thousands of years. Making a Mosaic TrivetDec 18, 1:00pmArt Center Morro BayMorro Bay Art Association is proud to present, Making a Mosaic Trivet with the owners of Cracked Up Mosaics, Anne Hodges and Paula Hulet.

Mosaics are works of art created by using glass or ceramic tiles and grout to make a picture. Mosaics date as far back as 1500 B.C. and are found all over the world. Mosaics adorn the ceilings in cathedrals with elaborate details but can be as simple as a beautiful trivet to adorn your home.

Anne Hodges and Paul Hulet will teach you step by step, how to make a mosaic trivet.

Anne has worked in calligraphy and stained glass, focusing on mosaics for the last 10 years. She is a retired teacher and former owner of Bay Osos Montessori School in Los Osos.

Paula has previously worked with fabric and decoupage. A love of gardening led her to collaborate with Anne creating beautiful mosaic pieces. Paula is a retired Pastor from the Estero Bay United Methodist Church and currently involved with Yes, We Can Peacebuilders, nonviolence awareness classes. She can also be seen volunteering on the Embarcadero.

During this workshop you will learn how to design and create a mosaic trivet. You will learn how to select materials, lay out a pleasing pattern and adhere the tiles to the trivet base.

Anne and Paula will teach you how to properly grout and seal your project. All materials will be supplied, however, if you have a favorite tile or ceramic pieces you may bring those and incorporate them into your workshop project.

What a great thing to learn right before holidays!

Quick Studies in Clay with Anne GrannisOct 9, 1:00pmArt Center Morro BayMorro Bay Art Association is proud to present a 2 half-days workshop, Quick Studies in Clay with Anne Grannis.

Anne will be teaching techniques to sculpt a whole figure, a torso, or a bas relief using water-based clay. This intense session will guide the beginning or advanced sculptor in the essence of figure sculpting, giving the student a spontaneous, emotional arena to work in; without the finishing details of a refined piece. We will be working from a live model.

Anne has been teaching and working with clay since she was a girl growing up in an artistic household of New England. She has taught ceramic workshops, stone carving and sculpture in Northern California areas; Fort Mason Art School, San Francisco and Half Moon Bay. She was the Artistic Council Chair of SFWA Gallery – Sculpture Representative. She’s taught Quick Studies in Clay in Half Moon Bay, Redwood City, and Palo Alto and now shares her knowledge with us in Morro Bay.

Anne says: “I often use natural clay, as it is an amazingly pliable medium with which to work and being a material originating eons ago, I can connect with the far past to create anything large and rough or small and detailed, with everything in between. My sense of whimsy prevails.”

Dot MandalaOct 11, 3:00pmArt Center Morro BayFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a demonstration of Dot Mandala with Lynne Harrington.

A mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Asian cultures. It can be understood in two different ways: externally as a visual representation of the universe or internally as a guide for several practices that take place in many Asian traditions, including meditation. In Hinduism and Buddhism, the belief is that by entering the mandala and proceeding towards its center, you are guided through the cosmic process of transforming the universe from one of suffering into one of joy and happiness.

In their most basic form, mandalas are circles contained within a square and arranged into sections that are all organized around a single, central point. They’re typically produced on paper or cloth, drawn on a surface with threads, fashioned in bronze, or built in stone. While extraordinary as a standalone work of art, mandalas hold symbolic and meditative meaning beyond their vibrant appearance.

Lynne works as the Director of Data Management at Cal Poly, but when not at work she enjoys creating art. She is passionate about dot mandalas, finding the process of creating them meditative and the end result beautiful. Lynne also enjoys ink and paper drawing and making jewelry that combines dot mandala techniques.

Art in the 21st Century - March 2022Mar 14, 3:00pmArt Center Morro BayFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a documentary of four contemporary Los Angeles artists. Community is what the L.A. art world is all about. Join us for this free video highlighting four contemporary artists who share their space, time and freedom to experiment.

Diana Thater was born in San Francisco in 1962. She makes video installations that poetically grapple with threats to the natural world, from the extinction of species to long-lasting environmental disasters such as the nuclear fallout of Chernobyl. Many of the artist’s works take the space where people and animals meet as their subject, exploring the experiences of wild gorillas in a Cameroon park, a wolf trained to work in Hollywood films, and a monkey-inhabited temple in India.

Liz Larner was born in Sacramento, California in 1960. She experiments with abstract sculptural forms in a dizzying array of materials, including polychromatic ceramics that evoke the tectonic geologic shifts of the western landscape. An inventor of new forms, Larner’s sculptures are not easy to categorize. They defy easy description by design, such as the geometric sculpture of a cube turning into a sphere that is both yet neither, or a complex chain of linked metal rings that never tangles and can also be worn as jewelry.

Tala Madani was born in Tehran, Iran in 1981. She skewers stereotypes in her sharply satirical paintings that evoke clashes of culture: men and women, the rational and the absurd, Western and non-Western. Madani’s figurative paintings often feature a riotous cast of middle-aged men, balding and stocky, whose libidinal mayhem wreaks havoc on any situation the artist thrusts them into.

Edgar Arceneaux was born in Los Angeles in 1972. He investigates historical patterns through drawings, installations, and multimedia events, such as the reenactment of Ben Vereen’s tragically misunderstood blackface performance at Ronald Reagan’s 1981 Inaugural Gala. In the artist’s work, linear logic is abandoned in favor of wordplay and visual associations, revealing how language, technology, and systems of ordering produce reality as much as describe them.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a demonstration in, hammered metal jewelry creating unique one-of-a-kind designs. Discover the exciting world of hammered metal to create gorgeous jewelry. Joan Martin Fee is described as a craft designer, television personality, author, magazine editor, Instructions editor, voiceover specialist and owner of creative me time.

It’s amazing to know that Joan once had a full-time job in the aerospace industry. One morning in 1990 she turned on the television and while flipping through the channels, came upon a nationally televised craft show, Aleene's Creative Living. She watched with great excitement and at the end noticed that it was taped only twenty minutes from her home. Viewers were encouraged to submit ideas to the show. Joan did just that! She was totally shocked when the producer asked her to demonstrate how to make her "Dress up Dolly" using shrink wrap and feature her on the show! From that happenstance beginning, nearly 30 years ago, Joan's creative journey that includes working for the largest manufacturer's in the industry, brings us to today where she continues her passion of making people feel special through creativity.

During this demonstration, Joan will discuss metal gauges and demonstrate basic jewelry tools used to manipulate and make holes in the metal. Samples of several different techniques will be on display. Participants will have the hands-on experience of

Learning to Breathe - June 2022Jun 13, 3:00pmArt Center Morro BayFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to offer a presentation with Travel Photographer and Lecturer, Michael J. Costa.

Michael J. Costa first made the long the trek to the Mt. Everest Base Camp in 2016 and one year later returned to Nepal to explore the wonders of Annapurna and the Nagarkot region with
his camera. With images both awe-inspiring and down to earth, Costa captures the spirit of Nepal.

Whether you’re inspired by the great Himalaya mountain range, have a soul-searching experience in Buddhist or Hindu temples, or connect with the people that you meet along the journey, Costa says the adventure is unique for each traveler; determined by who you are and how you choose to engage with the experience.

“The images I captured along the way reflect the people and places I encountered, as well as the nature of my personal experience.” -Costa

Costa visually describes a journey that takes you to places like no others on earth. The rigorous hike to the base of Mt. Everest starts at 9,000 ft in Lukla, Nepal and brings you to the top of
Kalla Pathar at an elevation of 18,600 ft. The artist’s travels took him through different regions in this unique landscape – mountains and villages, plains and glaciers – as well refugee camps affected by the April 25, 2015 earthquake.

Michael J. Costa is a graduate of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He has worked as a photo journalist for the San Mateo Daily Journal and Sierra Star, and as a
videographer for Valley Public Television and Sierra Art Trails. Costa is represented by Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst, CA. He now splits his time between Oakhurst and Los Osos, CA

This exciting lecture demonstration will explore the grand vistas of the Himalayan landscape along the Annapurna Trail (up to 13,000 feet above sea Kathmandu and other, more remote,
locales.

While we’re all settling into our own new normal, Morro Bay Art Association is happy to announce Art Center Morro Bay has reopened.

The gallery is following “Business Readiness to Open” guidelines, set forth by the California Department of Public Health to help ensure we are offering a clean and safe environment tor our volunteers and customers. At this time, we are requiring volunteers and guests to wear some form of facial covering before entering the gallery.

Can we talk about face coverings for a moment please? Wearing a face covering while inside the gallery is not just a requirement, it’s an act of love and respect. Some of us feel it unnecessary, or even an infringement of our rights to be told to wear a mask. We get that. The disruptions in our lives are causing some to struggle with devastating financial losses as well. On the other hand, this thoughtful and considerate act, could save the lives of our friends, neighbors and strangers who may be medically vulnerable to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, Covid-19.

A hand sanitizing station is offered to our guests, floor decals are reminders to continue social distancing and hand washing efforts. If you do not have a face covering, we'll offer cloth masks for a nominal fee. Aside from professional weekly deep cleaning, docents are asked to sanitize before, during and after their shifts.

All of these new measures are part of a “worksite specific plan” designed to keep us all safe and healthy. This is truly an extraordinary time. Thank you for working together.

Thank you for understanding. Your kind and charitable spirits are the reason Art Center Morro Bay is such a great art center!

Architecture of Light - March 2021Mar 19, 9:00amArt Center Morro BayMorro Bay Art Association is proud to present world renowned artist and author, Thomas W. Schaller for a watercolor workshop, “Architecture of Light”.

Following a 20-year career in New York City as an architect and architectural artist, Thomas Schaller is now based in Los Angeles where he devotes himself full-time to fine art in watercolor.

Mr. Schaller feels that a final painting begins long before an artist ever touches brush to paper!

The focus of this workshop will be less about technical expertise and more about intent, inspiration, observation and finding your unique artist voice. Enjoy daily demonstrations and discussions. You'll learn everything you need to know about atmospheric expression in watercolor, including depictions of sky, water, and fog. Then take your art to the next level by exploring the tension, resolution, and connections between complements, including warm and cool, vertical and horizontal, man-made and natural. You'll discover how to make sure all the parts of your painting work in unison to tell a powerfully communicative story! Students may bring their own photo reference – something that resonates with them personally.

“As an artist, it is light, that is the constant narrative in my work. So when I’m deciding on what it is I wish to paint, I concentrate less on specific objects – places or things – and more on the strength of a strong abstract value composition of darks and lights. A common phrase we often hear is: “Mother Nature is the best teacher” While I agree that real world observation is a crucial skill for the artist, no less so are the lessons to be learned from memory, dreams, and pure invention.” ~ Thomas W. Schaller, AWS, NWS, TWSA

Mr. Schaller has authored art books, instructional video’s, DVD’s and has been featured in several publications. He is one of the few watercolor artists to be featured in The American Masters Exhibition 2015 at the famed Salmagundi Club in NYC. He received a Graham Foundation Grant and was a two-time recipient of the Hugh Ferris Memorial Prize. In 2017 he was a finalist for the Lynx Prize for Contemporary Art; Trieste. In 2019 he was awarded the Abu Rawash Master Award.

Mr. Schaller is a signature member of many organizations including: American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Northwest Watercolor Society, San Diego Watercolor Society, California Watercolor Association, California Art Club, American Society of Architectural Perspectivists and New York Society of Renderers.

He is president emeritus of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators and founding member of the group, North American Watercolor Artists. His work has been included in major exhibitions and collections worldwide.

Discover why it’s better to be less concerned with technical expertise and more about inspiration and observation. This workshop is an indoor class and appropriate for skill levels of intermediate to advanced.

The world around us would be bleak, except for the world within us. Art bears witness to this fact. #AloneTogether

PerspectivesSep 17, 12:00pmArt Center Morro BayMorro Bay Art Association is proud to present Perspectives.

This exhibit explores how perspective gives a three-dimensional feeling to a flat surface. Linier perspective creates the illusion of distance to a vanishing point. It’s a system of representing the way objects appear to get smaller and closer together, the farther away they are from the viewer. We see parallel lines as converging in the distance, although in reality they really don’t. Roads and railway lines are obvious examples. Multiple vanishing points such as a cityscapes, enable a more naturalistic representation.

Atmospheric or aerial perspective, creates the sense of distance by simulating changes affected by color such as blue in a mountain as it meets the sky.

This exhibit celebrates artistic expression in all media and its theme extends itself to anything that represents a variety of perspectives.

Origami Demo – Folding a Paper CraneApr 20, 12:00pmArt Center Morro BayArt Center Morro Bay is pleased to bring you the third of three origami demos. This one will be how to fold a crane.

We invite you to write a message of encouragement inside of the crane. Or perhaps you want to share a fun saying, or words of wisdom tucked inside. Like a fortune cookie, the message will only be revealed when the crane is opened.

Bring in your folded crane on the first exchange day after the Covid-19 shelter-at-home has ended and place them on our tree of health, and happiness. You can use any paper that is available to you, printer paper, magazine pages, or origami paper. Color plain paper to make it uniquely you.

We are sad to say that OSAT 2020 will be canceled due to the current global health crisis. We would like to make sure our community is safe during these uncertain times. With an unknown timeline of how long the COVID-19 pandemic will last, we felt it was the most responsible decision to cancel the event this year.

Anyone that has already purchased a ticket or an advertisement will be refunded. Refunds will take up to 5-10 business days to return to your account.

Stay tuned for next year's Open Studios Art Tour - 2021!
