Please help save Morro Bay, Art in the Park!

www.change.org/p/morro-bay-city-clerk-save-morro-bay-art-in-the-park?recruiter=944006375&utm_sour...

Morro Bay Art in the Park is facing potential closure in the coming few years if the City of Morro Bay continues with its current plans for moving the RTA/ Bus Stop.
This potential move would reduce the size of the small park. The move of the Bus Stop would reduce the size of the Art Show so much that it would be forced to cease operation.
The potential move of the Bus Stop to Morro Bay Blvd would create a daily traffic hazard, since School Buses would have to unload on this busy street. State Law requires that the School Buses must flash their lights when loading and unloading. This will require traffic to come to a halt BOTH WAYS on Morro Bay Blvd. This back up of traffic will increase the risk of accidents, especially coming west over the blind hill from the traffic circle.
The current Bus Stop is located on Harbor Street which has 1/10 the amount of traffic that Morro Bay Blvd has. It is a safer location. We support keeping the Morro Bay Transit Center in it's current location. We do not feel that the effort of obtaining a $500,000 State of California Grant is necessary.
A simple remodel of the current Transit Center, trimming back the adjoining large tree or removing it for more light and adding a 10x20 concrete patio in it's place along with more benches would obtain the desired result. This remodel could be done for $30,000 to $60,000 not 1/2 a million. Please support our efforts and help Save Morro Bay Art in the Park.

Mr. Christensen attended Michigan State University where he earned a B.A. in History. He participated in an overseas study program at Bedford College, London and attended the University of Manchester in England. Ken settled in Traverse City, Michigan, where he pursued a career as a freelance artist and writer for the local newspaper. While in Paris, Ken attended life drawing classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and was also an official copyist at the Louvre Museum.

While residing in Europe, Ken shifted from watercolor to oils and experimented in other techniques, primarily monoprints and block-prints.

In 1986 he moved to San Sebastian, Spain, where he continued to paint and taught English at a private academy. Ken eventually returned to the United States settling in Los Osos, CA where he currently resides.

During the Born in the USA exhibit, we are please to feature the art of Barry Lundgren!

Barry has been woodturning for over twenty years. Although he has taken workshops from other respected and admired woodturners, Barry considers himself to be self taught. His inspiration is derived from the wood, itself. The shape of each piece is as important as the type of wood he finds. Every piece different in color, texture, scent and character. Barry states, “Some pieces are turned green and I find it fascinating how they warp and distort into finished pieces.”

Barry rough-turns lidded boxes, threaded urns, and salad bowls, then allows them to dry and stabilize. Artworks are remounted and turned to finish their shape then left to dry, staying symmetrical. “Whether they are the classical shapes from the past or the natural-edge pieces that warp into their own shape, my goal is to make them all pleasing to the eye and touch.”

Don't miss this remarkable exhibit and the beautiful woodturner artwork of Barry Lundgren!

This bi-weekly oil painting class is a 10 month course through November, beginning with drawing techniques and progressing through black and white, limited palette to full palette.

All levels of ability and experience are welcome.

Each class consists of a video lesson and 3 reference images (a landscape, portrait and still life) that are emailed before the class at Morro Bay Art Center. The student can choose to paint one or all of the reference images or work from their own reference. Class time is spent painting with direction and feedback from Jason. Following the class another video will be delivered, Friday Feedback where we look at a students work and see how the lesson might be applied to make the painting even more beautiful. Each lesson/block ends with Monday Morning Inspiration (video emailed) where a master painting is examined and broken down to give the artist ideas of how the lesson was used to create that masterpiece.

The reference images are the same images for both lessons/blocks in that month. This allows the artist time to develop a painting. We ask for students to please sign up ahead of time so that the reference images and video lesson may be sent out before class time.

Meet the Artist
Reception SATURDAY, February 23, 4 -6pm

While you are in the gallery to see the exhibit, Light the Way, be sure to see the art of Robert C. Perry!

Robert C. Perry is a U.S Navy veteran who earned a Bachelor of Art degree from Cal State University, Bakersfield.

Although his pursuit of art as a profession was discouraged, he excelled with every art related class. Making his way through Japan and Southeast Asia, Robert admired exceptional designs that left a lasting impression. The pot as an art form, both traditional and lidded, intrigued him as he admired them along the Jemez Pueblo, located in Taos, New Mexico. Robert made the decision to purchase a lathe and take up woodturning, and began teaching himself the skills to become a master craftsman in the field of woodturning.

His designs are influenced by a mixture of Asian, Prairie and Mission styles. Outside artwork may sometimes affect the shape of a pot, however they always come to life solely on the lathe without aid of preliminary drawings.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present Thru the Lens II. This juried exhibition is a collection of fine art photography, featuring gifted photographers throughout the Central Coast.

Judge of Awards:

We are fortunate to have photographer and instructor, Brady Cabe as judge for this celebrated event. Brady is a seasoned photographer who enjoys the outdoors. With both feet and tripod in the water, he captures wildlife, a sunset, or the Milky Way late into the night. His passion for photographing the night sky overflows into summertime astrophotography.

Brady’s passion for photography has grown into sharing with others through astrophotography, sunset, and wildlife photography workshops. Teaching has caused Brady to reverse engineer everything he does. This process has guided his curriculum into simplified, step by step processes that make photography accessible for every skill level.
Brady states, “I’m a nature and landscape photographer based on the Central Coast of California, with a passion for sharing. I’m a bird nerd, a seal whisperer, a half marathon finisher, poker shark, Milky Way fanatic, and lover of chocolate.”
Featured 3D Artist:

Giselle Massey grew up in Los Osos, CA., where the Central Coast became a constant source of inspiration for her work. Her love of creativity and self expression blossomed into an art filled passion. Childhood summers spent outdoors in barefoot freedom have forever bonded her to the surrounding ecosystem. Perhaps it’s no surprise that the same plants and flowers she enjoyed during her childhood, are a recurring theme in her work.

“One of my passions is to bring art into everyday moments of life with functional ceramics like mugs, planters, and bowls. I carve and texture nearly every piece I make, often leaving portions of clay bare as a part of the design to be enjoyed by hands as well as eyes”.

Whether you are attending this remarkable exhibit to observe or to purchase, you are in for a delight! Thru the Lens II, an exhibit of fine art photography will be on display from August 8, through September 16, 2019. The opening reception is Aug 11, 2019, 2-4pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Thru the Lens IIAug 6, 12:00pmArt Center Morro BayMorro Bay Art Association is proud to present Thru the Lens II. This juried exhibition is a collection of fine art photography, featuring gifted photographers throughout the Central Coast. Judge of Awards: We are fortunate to have photographer and instructor, Brady Cabe as judge for this celebrated event. I’m a bird nerd, a seal whisperer, a half marathon finisher, poker shark, Milky Way fanatic, and lover of chocolate.” Featured 3D Artist: Giselle Massey grew up in Los Osos, CA., where the Central Coast became a constant source of inspiration for her work. Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present it’s 3rd Annual Juried Exhibition, a National event.

WHAT: Annual Juried Exhibition
WHEN: September 19 through October 29, 2019
RECEPTION: Sunday, September 22, 2019, 2-4pm
WHERE: Art Center Morro Bay, 835 Main Street, Morro Bay, CA 93442
CONTACT: 805-772-2504 or visit www.artcentermorrobay.org

This juried event is a collective of exceptional paintings spanning the United States. Many of the artists are internationally acclaimed. In addition, MBAA will feature the three dimensional art of Guyla Amyx.

We are fortunate to have award winning artist, Dennis Curry, as the judge for this celebrated event.

Judge of Awards:

Dennis Curry is a professional artist of international fame. Dennis served in the United States Army, 25th Infantry Division’s Combat Artists program in 1966 where he documented combat experiences from an artist’s perspective.

Upon returning to the U.S., Dennis attended Santa Monica College where he learned original printmaking. He traveled to East Africa and co-founded Duma Safaris with a friend and publisher, Christopher Law. This life changing experience afforded him the pleasure of introducing others to the great game areas that forever influenced his love of nature.

Following an introduction to the contemporary printmaking of Mylar Lithography, he founded Blue Berry Press, located in Cambria, CA., later becoming known for his work in the traditional, intaglio mediums of etching and engraving. Later, moving away from printmaking and wildlife, Dennis began working in the more traditional medium of oil painting to capture the light and color of the landscapes on location and in the studio.

Dennis has significantly contributed to conservation work around the world and his graphics are widely collected nationally and internationally.

Dennis relayed, “While much art of the past has dealt with the glories and follies of humankind, I feel a need to portray nature for its own sake with the hope of promoting value and respect for our unique planet and the varied form of life with which we share it.”

Dennis is a current member of Society of Animal Artists, Artists for Conservation and San Luis Outdoor Painters for the Environment.
Guest Artist:During this special event, we are proud to present the ceramic artwork of Guyla Amyx.
Guyla earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Eastern Washington University and a Master of Tine Art degree from Washington University. Guylas was a tenured professor at Cuesta Community College where she taught ceramic art for over 22 years and served eight years as the department chair.
Guyla’s early style of ceramics leaned toward the figurative, using brightly colored surfaces, geometric patterns and shapes. Her approach to working with clay involved a raw and spontaneous quality. Later during her tenure as professor, Guyla explored a renewed interest in the Cone 10 Reduction process that she shared with her students. Much of her work is reflective of this process. Guyla states, “You may see a more refined and meditative quality to my recent creations with carved porcelain and crystalline glazing, reflective of my exploration in yoga and Eastern philosophy.”
This exhibit celebrates the three dimensional work of Guyla Amyx and two dimensional, art work in all media of those artists accepted into this extraordinary exhibit. You will find a variety of subject matter spanning traditional landscape to contemporary and abstract. Whether you are attending this exhibit to observe or to purchase, you are in for a delight! Morro Bay Art Association’s Annual Juried Exhibit will be on display from September 19 through October 29, 2019.
A “meet the artists” opening reception, will be held, Sunday, September 22, 2019, 2-4pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present Zentangle© with certified instructor, Debbie Gedayloo.

The Zentangle Method© of mindful creation is a way to relax, focus and expand one’s imagination. Through guided systematic patterns, students learn to trust their creativity, increase awareness, respond confidently to the unexpected and discover the fun and healing in creative expression.

Incorporating a practice of Zentangle© allows for increased neuroplasticity and youthfulness in the brain. Anyone can feel successful and confident with the practice. If you can write the letters: I, C, S, O…you can follow the patterns. The underlying theories and systematic approach in the Zentangle Method© allow the participants to quiet the mind and focus, one stroke at a time.

Debbie has practiced the art of Zentangle© for four years stating, “Often when sitting in meditation, I simply can’t quiet my mind and I bounce all over the place in my head. But, when I put the pen to the Zentangle© tile, the outside stimuli fade away and my entire being becomes quiet.” Debbie believes in the healing potential of this method and is excited to teach others how to tap into the hidden wisdom in each of us!

Zentangle© is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. Join certified Zentangle© instructor, Debbie Gedayloo for monthly, celebratory and meditative art.

First time students are provided Zentangle© bag, pen, pencil, tortillon, tiles and instructions and extras.

Art Center Morro Bay

RECEPTION: Sunday, May 19, 2019, 2pm–4pm

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present a compelling exhibit, Born in the USA.

Immigration has been a touchstone of the U.S. political debate for decades. Even as most Americans celebrate their heritage and identity as a “nation of immigrants”, there seems to be a deep ambivalence about future immigration. Despite the complex issues surrounding the struggle of asylum, assimilation and deportation, increasing numbers of people continue to risk emotional and physical heartbreak for the opportunity to live a safer and better life by migrating to America. In some cases, the human toll mounts as men, women and children quietly disappear from the dessert landscape in pursuit of the “American Dream”.

Whether we are direct descendants of an immigrant or an immigrant ourselves, in the current climate, socially and politically, this subject is more relevant than ever.

Artists were invited to illustrate their personal concepts of the human struggle by confronting issues of immigration, or celebrate our great country’s vast ethnic and cultural diversity with art.

Art doesn’t just reflect the world — it engages with it.

This exhibit may depict scenes that some viewers find disturbing and not suitable for children.

During this event, we are please to feature the art of Barry Lundgren!

Born in the USA is on display from May 16 through June 24, 2019. Meet the artists at the opening reception Sunday, May 19, 2019, 2pm–4pm. This event is free and open to the public. Art Center Morro Bay is open from 12pm – 4pm daily.

Art Center Morro Bay

Reception: Sunday, June 30, 2-4pm

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present, The Morros, a collection of paintings in all media and styles that capture the color and energy of Morro Rock and sister formations.

This event is a celebration of the Nine Sisters or the Morros, a chain of volcanic mountains and hills that span east from Morro Bay, through San Luis Obispo County. Locals will debate whether there are seven sisters or nine in this family of geological formations. In fact, there may be more than fifteen peaks belonging to this string of volcanic plugs.

During this exhibit, Art Center Morro Bay will feature glass sculptor, George Jercich. George’s characteristic, hand blown glass sculptures, capture the spirit of Morro Bay and the Central Coast. George graduated from San Jose State University in 1984 with his MFA in Sculpture/Plastic Arts. He travelled throughout the USA, Europe and Asia seeking experiences in glass. He attended Pilchuck Glass School, the Interglas Symposium in Novy Bor, Czechoslovakia, participated in American/Thai Cultural Exchange Programs and co-instructed glassblowing at Ox-Bow Summer School of the Arts (SAIC). George is also the co-founder of the California Glass Exchange. George instructed glassblowing, glass forming, 3D design and sculpture courses at Cal Poly for over 35 years.

The Morros will be on display from June 27 through August 5, 2019. Meet the artists at the opening reception on Sunday, June 30, 2pm-4pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present award winning artist, Cuong Nguyen for a three-day workshop, “Portraits in Pastel”.

A professional artist of international acclaim, Cuong Nguyen, works in both oil and pastel, though casual viewers may have difficulty distinguishing the two media in his hands. He almost never blends strokes, yet achieves a level of detail and smoothness of gradation that is unusual in pastel paintings!

Mr. Nguyen studied at the Academy of Art in Saigon, Vietnam. He earned a degree in Illustration & Graphic Design from San Jose State University and established a successful career as an icon designer with a prominent Silicon Valley company before becoming a professional artist. Ultimately, Cuong’s passion for art resurfaced. He began to create sidewalk chalk drawings. These ephemeral artworks were as large as 16' x 24'. Cuong soon established a reputation for painting amazingly lifelike portraits on asphalt. He began to exhibit in international art fairs and returned to his studio, where he spent endless hours refining techniques with more traditional media.

Cuong Nguyen is a member of Oil Painters of America, International Guild of Realism, a Distinguished Pastellist with Pastel Society of America and Pastel Society of the West Coast, Master Pastelist with Pastel of America and Master IAPS Circle with International Association of Pastel Societies. His work has been exhibited at national and international exhibits; the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, California and the Haggin Museum in Stockton.
Cuong is currently represented by John Pence gallery in San Francisco, California.

Learn about drawing, values, edges and composition, in a workshop designed to create in a relaxed, informative yet focused environment, for all skill levels. Students will concentrate on drawing the human head and creating life-like skin tone colors using the green foundation technique, while developing new skills in soft pastel and pastel pencil. This workshop will feature live models.

Here’s a fun way to create a great piece of wearable art!

Creatively Embellished Pine Needle Pendant or BroochNov 13, 10:00amArt Center Morro BayMorro Bay Art Association is proud to present a pine needle jewelry workshop by award winning artist, Sheri Smith. Students will learn to create a unique pendant or brooch with creative embellishments. A passion for creating jewelry and baskets, has taken Sheri on the path of exploring the countless ways a piece can be adorned as it’s being created. Sheri uses traditional pine needle coiling and weaving techniques, and embellishes her works of art with fibers, ribbons, beads, wire and hardware. Sheri attended University of Oregon EMU Craft Center Continuing Education. She taught youth arts, workshops and Smithsonian Arts through Nature. Sheri is a member of The Pine Needle Group, Columbia Basin Basketry Guild, National Basketry Organization, Art Forum Eugene, Oregon and Willamette Baskets Group. Sheri’s pine needle creations have been featured in numerous publications, and she authored a tutorial for a French magazine, Le Lien Creatif, on pine needle pendants. This workshop will explore a variety of ways to begin coiling while adding colorful embellishments, using various fibers, beads and wire to complete a unique piece of jewelry. Learn the basics of coiling with longleaf pine needles, colorful waxed linen and beads to create a pendant or a brooch you can wear home! Perfect for beginning to advanced students. These techniques can be later used in making sculptural coiled baskets and jewelry. All materials provided. Students will need to bring a good pair of embroidery scissors. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn techniques from an experienced pine needle coiler and weaver. Sheri will be giving a free demonstration, open to the public on Monday, November 12, 3-5pm. Pre-registration for this workshop can be made at Art Center Morro Bay or online at www.artcentermorrobay.org Refunds may be given for cancellations made seven days prior to class with the exception of a $30. non refundable, registration fee. FALL EXCURSION September 21, 2019
Bruce Munro - Field of Light Installation

Description: Morro Bay Art Associations is proud to present a Fall Excursion to the Field of Light Installation of Bruce Munro in Paso Robles.

British artist Bruce Munro is best known for immersive large-scale light-based installations inspired largely by his interest in shared human experience.
San Luis Obispo THE TRIBUNE (September 25th, 2018) reports:
Starting this winter, crews will begin re vegetating a portion of the [Sensorio] property. In the spring, a Field of Light installation by artist Bruce Munro will go on display.

The Field of Light, which features an array of multicolored flower-like lights, has been installed at sites around the world, including several spots in the United States.

Hunter hopes to open the art installation in May, complete with food trucks and temporary tents to provide visitors with refreshments. The Field of Light is a temporary piece of art and will be on display for two years, he said. “We’re very fortunate to have this caliber of art installation,” DeCarli said.

We will board a luxury tour bus the evening of September 21, 2019 in Morro Bay and travel to Sensorio, an elaborate garden and art attraction formerly known as Discovery Gardens, located on Highway 46 East between Airport and Dry Creek roads. The project is reminiscent of the famed Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia.

We will have plenty of time to view the astonishing light installation featuring works ranging in scale from immersive to intimate. Similar installations in California have been described as multi-hues waves, clusters, cascades, flocks and seas of illumination, transforming the area into a breathtaking spectacle of light. You can see other installation done by Bruce Munro at (www.brucemunro.co.uk/installations/field-of-light/)

Pre-registration is required. Refunds will be given for cancellations made seven days prior to excursion with the exception of a $20.00 non-refundable, registration fee.

Art Center Morro Bay

RECEPTION: Sunday, April 7, 2-4pm

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present, From Natural to Abstraction, an open, all media exhibit and Pottery by Jim Gregory.

Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be slight, partial, or complete, as abstraction in art exists along a continuum. Even art that aims for realism of the highest degree can be said to be abstract since perfect representation may be elusive.

Concurrent with this exhibit, MBAA is proud to feature, fine artist, Jim Gregory. Jim earned a Bachelor of Art degree at Gambling State University where he became Gambling’s “White Tiger”, the first quarterback at a predominantly all black school. “I feel fortunate to have been a small part of the Civil Rights Movement of the late 60’s and early 70’s. This was a positive experience for me.” Jim went on to earn a Master’s degree at Oregon College of Education, now Western Oregon State University. Jim returned to the Central Valley to teach pottery at Reedley High School for 33 years and at Reedley Jr. College for 26 years as an adjunct faculty member. Jim relocated to the Central Coast where he makes pottery that is masterfully produced with horse hair for beautiful earth tones to raku with vibrant color. Come in to explore these stunning artworks that are both decorative and functional!

This exhibit celebrates artistic expression in all media. You will find a variety of subject matter spanning nature to total abstract.

“From Natural to Abstraction” and Pottery by Jim Gregory will be on display from April 4 through May 13, 2019. Meet the artists at the opening reception Sunday, April 7, 2019, 2pm-4pm. This event is free and open to the public. Art Center Morro Bay is open from 12pm – 4pm daily.
