October 9, 10, & 11, 2020

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a 3-day workshop, Abstraction and Multiple Viewpoint Perspective, with Trowzers Akimbo.

While Multiple Viewpoint Perspective will be the main focus of this intensive workshop, other abstraction vehicles will also be discussed and encouraged. The workshop goal will be for each attendee to go home with an abstract painting of their own design.

Trowzers Akimbo was raised in Venice, Ca and the eclectic vibe of the area is represented in much of his work. The art colony esthetic of the beach town attracted the best of art teachers to the school system and Betty Edwards, who wrote the influential book, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” was among his talented high school art teachers. Among his many awards, Akimbo was awarded an Emmy for his animated titles for NBC: The First 50 Years: A Closer Look. Powerful influences in his painting work are Braque and Picasso (how can these two inventors of cubism and multiple viewpoint perspective, standing on the shoulders of Cézanne, not be an influence), Matisse, Gauguin, Lautrec, Van Gogh, Klee and Kandinsky.

Akimbo studied art and received his BFA at CalArts in Southern California.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a documentary film Cave of Forgotten Dreams.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams is a 2010 documentary film by Werner Herzog about the Chauvet Cave in southern France, which contains the oldest human-painted images yet discovered. Some of them were crafted around 32,000 years ago. The film premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival and consists of images from inside the cave as well as of interviews with various scientists and historians. The film also includes footage of the nearby Pont d'Arc natural bridge.
The Chauvet Cave is one of the most famous prehistoric rock art sites in the world. Located in the Ardeche region of France, the cave art of Chauvet was discovered as recently as 1994 by Jean-Marie Chauvet. The importance of the Chauvet Cave art paintings is based on two factors: firstly, the aesthetic quality of the Palaeolithic cave paintings, and secondly, the great age of the rock art.
This film is rated G and is 95 minutes. Directed and Written by Werner Herzon, released by IFC Films.

Demos are FREE and Open to the Public

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a demonstration of dry-point etchings by accomplished artist and gallery owner, Rosey Rosenthal.

Rosey Rosenthal earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Graphic Arts and Illustration from Pratt Institute. It’s difficult to express Rosey’s accomplishments without mentioning his wife and partner, Barbara. The Rosenthal’s are founding members of the Central Coast Printmakers Group of (SLOMA) San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, originating 36 years ago. Rosey, his wife Barbara, Stevie Vorhees and Joan Sullivan operated The Baywood Gallery, at the pier in Baywood, CA. Rosey and Barbara initiated the artist group, (SLAG) an artists’ cooperative located within the San Luis Obispo, Creamery Building. The Rosenthal’s later opened “Art is for Everyone”, a gallery in Baywood Park serving the public for 9 years. They established a printmaking studio, “Granada Arts” in Los Osos, selling over 30,000 etchings and relief prints, where they have taught etching workshops since 1981. Barbara brought art to the San Luis Obispo public schools, through the Santa Barbara Creative Project, for nine years.

Participants of this demonstration should bring an old cancelled credit or membership card with an idea for a 2 1/8" x 3 1/4" dry-point etching (see photo). Rosey will have a small etching press and tools needed to scratch designs into the plastic cards. He will give a quick overview and demonstrate how to scratch and print a card, then ink and print your completed etching (original print).

This will be an interactive demonstration that you’re sure to enjoy!

Please help save Morro Bay, Art in the Park!

www.change.org/p/morro-bay-city-clerk-save-morro-bay-art-in-the-park?recruiter=944006375&utm_sour...

Morro Bay Art in the Park is facing potential closure in the coming few years if the City of Morro Bay continues with its current plans for moving the RTA/ Bus Stop.
This potential move would reduce the size of the small park. The move of the Bus Stop would reduce the size of the Art Show so much that it would be forced to cease operation.
The potential move of the Bus Stop to Morro Bay Blvd would create a daily traffic hazard, since School Buses would have to unload on this busy street. State Law requires that the School Buses must flash their lights when loading and unloading. This will require traffic to come to a halt BOTH WAYS on Morro Bay Blvd. This back up of traffic will increase the risk of accidents, especially coming west over the blind hill from the traffic circle.
The current Bus Stop is located on Harbor Street which has 1/10 the amount of traffic that Morro Bay Blvd has. It is a safer location. We support keeping the Morro Bay Transit Center in it's current location. We do not feel that the effort of obtaining a $500,000 State of California Grant is necessary.
A simple remodel of the current Transit Center, trimming back the adjoining large tree or removing it for more light and adding a 10x20 concrete patio in it's place along with more benches would obtain the desired result. This remodel could be done for $30,000 to $60,000 not 1/2 a million. Please support our efforts and help Save Morro Bay Art in the Park.

Come in and relax with Zentangle

Zentangle©Feb 17, 10:00amArt Center Morro BayOPEN TO MEMBERS AND THE PUBLIC

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present Zentangle© with certified instructor, Debbie Gedayloo.

The Zentangle Method© of mindful creation is a way to relax, focus and expand one’s imagination. Through guided systematic patterns, students learn to trust their creativity, increase awareness, respond confidently to the unexpected and discover the fun and healing in creative expression.

Incorporating a practice of Zentangle© allows for increased neuroplasticity and youthfulness in the brain. Anyone can feel successful and confident with the practice. If you can write the letters: I, C, S, O…you can follow the patterns. The underlying theories and systematic approach in the Zentangle Method© allow the participants to quiet the mind and focus, one stroke at a time.

Debbie has practiced the art of Zentangle© for four years stating, “Often when sitting in meditation, I simply can’t quiet my mind and I bounce all over the place in my head. But, when I put the pen to the Zentangle© tile, the outside stimuli fade away and my entire being becomes quiet.” Debbie believes in the healing potential of this method and is excited to teach others how to tap into the hidden wisdom in each of us!

Zentangle© is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. Join certified Zentangle© instructor, Debbie Gedayloo for monthly, celebratory and meditative art.

During the Born in the USA exhibit, we are please to feature the art of Barry Lundgren!

Barry has been woodturning for over twenty years. Although he has taken workshops from other respected and admired woodturners, Barry considers himself to be self taught. His inspiration is derived from the wood, itself. The shape of each piece is as important as the type of wood he finds. Every piece different in color, texture, scent and character. Barry states, “Some pieces are turned green and I find it fascinating how they warp and distort into finished pieces.”

Barry rough-turns lidded boxes, threaded urns, and salad bowls, then allows them to dry and stabilize. Artworks are remounted and turned to finish their shape then left to dry, staying symmetrical. “Whether they are the classical shapes from the past or the natural-edge pieces that warp into their own shape, my goal is to make them all pleasing to the eye and touch.”

Don't miss this remarkable exhibit and the beautiful woodturner artwork of Barry Lundgren!

This bi-weekly oil painting class is a 10 month course through November, beginning with drawing techniques and progressing through black and white, limited palette to full palette.

All levels of ability and experience are welcome.

Each class consists of a video lesson and 3 reference images (a landscape, portrait and still life) that are emailed before the class at Morro Bay Art Center. The student can choose to paint one or all of the reference images or work from their own reference. Class time is spent painting with direction and feedback from Jason. Following the class another video will be delivered, Friday Feedback where we look at a students work and see how the lesson might be applied to make the painting even more beautiful. Each lesson/block ends with Monday Morning Inspiration (video emailed) where a master painting is examined and broken down to give the artist ideas of how the lesson was used to create that masterpiece.

The reference images are the same images for both lessons/blocks in that month. This allows the artist time to develop a painting. We ask for students to please sign up ahead of time so that the reference images and video lesson may be sent out before class time.

Light the Way and Art of Robert C. PerryFeb 21, 12:00pmArt Center Morro BayMeet the Artist
Reception SATURDAY, February 23, 4 -6pm

While you are in the gallery to see the exhibit, Light the Way, be sure to see the art of Robert C. Perry!

Robert C. Perry is a U.S Navy veteran who earned a Bachelor of Art degree from Cal State University, Bakersfield.

Although his pursuit of art as a profession was discouraged, he excelled with every art related class. Making his way through Japan and Southeast Asia, Robert admired exceptional designs that left a lasting impression. The pot as an art form, both traditional and lidded, intrigued him as he admired them along the Jemez Pueblo, located in Taos, New Mexico. Robert made the decision to purchase a lathe and take up woodturning, and began teaching himself the skills to become a master craftsman in the field of woodturning.

His designs are influenced by a mixture of Asian, Prairie and Mission styles. Outside artwork may sometimes affect the shape of a pot, however they always come to life solely on the lathe without aid of preliminary drawings.
