Excursion to Charrizo Plain and Studio of Jan Cooper

Excursion to Charrizo Plain and Studio of Jan Cooper

May 5, 9:00am - May 5, 5:00pm

Morro Bay, CA  93442 Map

Bring your camera! This year's rain may bring a superbloom to the Carrizo Plain!

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present an excursion to the Pictographs found on the Carrizo Plain, with a visit to the art studio of Jan Cooper.

Jan has been an integral part of the Carrizo Plain her entire life. With family roots reaching back generations, her watercolor collage paintings reflect the Native American pictographs found in what is now a National Monument. Jan will demonstrate watercolor collages of rock paintings and share her knowledge of the area.

Board a luxury charter in Morro Bay and travel in comfort to the Carrizo Plain. A tour guide from the Goodwin Education Center will provide a brief history. The group will then travel to the Painted Rock Parking Lot and hike approximately two thirds of a mile to Painted Rock. Although the path does not have a significant change in elevation, it is not handicapped accessible.
Painted Rock, a large U-shaped rock, features what was once an elaborate, multicolored pictograph site created by the Chumash, a Native American people who historically inhabited the coastal regions of California. Time spent within the Painted Rock alcove may be limited or canceled to protect prairie falcons or other nesting birds.

Not surprisingly, the power of this location, with it’s historical, Native American Pictographs, continues to enthrall visitors today.

Visitors will then re-board the tour van, traveling approximately thirty minutes to the studio of Jan Cooper, where lunch will be served. Guests may enjoy an opportunity to make sketches or photograph the beautiful Carrizo Plain!

Wear comfortable walking shoes and layered clothing. No cell service is available on the Carrizo Plain. Hiking portion of tour is not handicapped accessible. For additional information, email Gail Martin: gailm1314@gmail.com or call 805-234-8766.

Pre-registration is required. Refunds will be given for cancellations made seven days prior to excursion with the exception of a $20.00 non-refundable, registration fee. Please return form to Gail Martin, gailm1314@gmail.com

FALL EXCURSION September 21, 2019
Bruce Munro - Field of Light Installation

Description: Morro Bay Art Associations is proud to present a Fall Excursion to the Field of Light Installation of Bruce Munro in Paso Robles.

British artist Bruce Munro is best known for immersive large-scale light-based installations inspired largely by his interest in shared human experience.
San Luis Obispo THE TRIBUNE (September 25th, 2018) reports:
Starting this winter, crews will begin re vegetating a portion of the [Sensorio] property. In the spring, a Field of Light installation by artist Bruce Munro will go on display.

The Field of Light, which features an array of multicolored flower-like lights, has been installed at sites around the world, including several spots in the United States.

Hunter hopes to open the art installation in May, complete with food trucks and temporary tents to provide visitors with refreshments. The Field of Light is a temporary piece of art and will be on display for two years, he said. “We’re very fortunate to have this caliber of art installation,” DeCarli said.

We will board a luxury tour bus the evening of September 21, 2019 in Morro Bay and travel to Sensorio, an elaborate garden and art attraction formerly known as Discovery Gardens, located on Highway 46 East between Airport and Dry Creek roads. The project is reminiscent of the famed Butchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia.

We will have plenty of time to view the astonishing light installation featuring works ranging in scale from immersive to intimate. Similar installations in California have been described as multi-hues waves, clusters, cascades, flocks and seas of illumination, transforming the area into a breathtaking spectacle of light. You can see other installation done by Bruce Munro at (www.brucemunro.co.uk/installations/field-of-light/)

Pre-registration is required. Refunds will be given for cancellations made seven days prior to excursion with the exception of a $20.00 non-refundable, registration fee.
