WHEN: Sunday December 8,
TIME: 1-3pm
COST: $75 Members / $85 Non-members
In this class, students will be introduced to the basics of using natural dyes. We will talk through proper fabric selection and preparation as well as some of the different dyes available. After a demonstration, students will make their own naturally dyed silk scarf using the “bundle dye” technique. In this process, natural dye stuff is sprinkled on a piece of fabric, rolled and wrapped tightly, and then steamed to transfer the pigments onto the fabric. Students will use this technique to create beautiful abstract patterns and will leave with their own 21” square, silk satin scarf.
MATERIALS: Instructor will provide all materials but students are welcome to bring their own flowers to experiment with. Some flowers that print well are cosmos, coreopsis, marigolds, hibiscus, and goldenrod. Other flowers are welcome and experimentation is encouraged!
Materials Provided by Instructor: Pretreated scarves, a variety of dye materials, spray bottles, twine, scissors, and a steamer.
