For this show, we asked artists to question their own personal “outer limits” as creators in this new world, and regardless of the inspiration, the purpose of this exhibit is to play with the edge, to push the limits, and to test the outer boundaries. WORKSHOP - Papermaking with Anne Grannis
WHERE: Art Center Morro Bay
PRICE: $45 members, $55 non-members
Join our papermaking class and discover the basics of creating your own handmade paper in this introductory class.
What you’ll learn in this class:
* How to create paper pulp.
* How to make recycled paper.
* How to embed designs into your paper.
* How to add inclusions like flowers, plants and thread into your paper.
You will also learn how damp paper can be molded and shaped to create sculptural projects, as well as used as collage, painted on, etc.
Taught by Anne Grannis, an accomplished artist and someone who loves to make stuff.
Grannis will provide the necessary materials to create the paper. Students need to bring several old towels and an apron. If you want, you can also bring inclusions like flowers, leaves, and/or fibers, like yarn or twine.

Join our wire-wrapped jewelry class and discover the art of creating stunning and unique pieces of jewelry. You’ll learn fundamental wire wrapping techniques, including how to shape and manipulate wire
to create intricate designs. You will walk away with the skills to create necklaces, earrings and bracelets.
No experience necessary. Because each student selects their own bead collection, no two will be the same. This class is the perfect opportunity to unleash your creativity and make something truly special. During this two-hour class you will gain hands-on experience utilizing three simple tools, 24-gauge wire and a vast array of beads that you can personally choose from, all produced by the artist.
Jeweler Li Li Clever will take you through the process of making wire-wrapped jewelry. Clever, your instructor with 25 years of jewelry designing experience, will demonstrate multiple techniques, as well as, work individually with each student to address their artistry level.

Our latest show, Outer Limits Open this week.
RECEPTION: SUNDAY, APRIL 7, 2-4 PM
With a retro nod to the 50s fascination with outer space, we asked artists to tap into their personal “outer limits” for this unusual exhibit. We prompted artists to draw on their childhood memories of such TV shows as “The Outer Limits” and the “Twilight Zone.” Or, a different angle of the same subject could come from more recent obsessions over mysterious white balloons, the colonization of other planets, or the Webb telescope, providing us with mind-boggling celestial glimpses from the beginning of time. Most importantly, we ask artists to question their own personal “outer limits” as creators in this new world where, for example, artificial intelligence is currently challenging our perception of creativity. Regardless of the inspiration, the purpose of this exhibit is to play with the edge and to push the limits and test the outer boundaries.

Mosaic Garden Pole
The class is held in charming Morro Bay, California with it's landmark Morro Rock, and features amazing seafood and views galore. Snacks will be provided and food is available within steps of the venue.
Hours will be Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 with orientation, Saturday 9:00 - 7:00 and Sunday 9:00 - 2:00. You can always take a break for some fresh ocean air and shopping.
The garden pole is 4' tall, with a decorative area of 3', leaving 1' to mount underground. The post measures 4" square. Total working area is 36" x 16".
You'll learn all the ins-and-outs of working on an outdoor project from pole prep to correct adhesives to grouting to sealing to mounting your masterpiece. Use of tools and supplies are included. Depending on desired detail and skill level, the pole may be completed in the workshop. If not, supplies and instructions will be sent home with you to complete your mosaic creation.
Feel free to bring do-dads, baubles and things you have to incorporate into your garden pole. Metal pieces are not recommended.
A $100 deposit is required to hold your space in class. Full payment of $275 is due on May 1st.
Once payment is received, Joan will contact you to discuss your layout, provide blank diagrams and a provided materials list to help in designing your garden pole.

GICLÉE PHOTOS ON CANVAS WITH CHUCK JENNINGS
Monday, March 11 from 3-5pm
Chuck has a BA in painting and drawing, and MA and MFA degrees in Fine Art and Design. He began teaching design and color theory at Cal Poly in 1968. He was the Chair of the Department of Art and Design for 14 years before he retired in 2008. He has exhibited his work throughout the U. S. with favorite venues in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Sedona, Arizona. His work is included in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
Although for most of his art career he concentrated on painting, he has had a passion for photography since he bought his first single-lens reflex camera in 1967. Since 2002, he has devoted all his creative energies to digital photography. He now owns Giclée Print and Photo and ReelEyes Photography.
Chuck has a variety of interests, including classic cars and flying, but he is most well known locally for portraits and event photography, which includes his work with Hospice, CASA, and the League of Women Voters, and his technique of putting photos on canvas. He will be showing his wide-ranging photos, explaining his technique, and discussing his journey to professional artist.

EXHIBITION: Your Outer Limits
With a retro nod to the 50s fascination with outer space, we asked artists to tap into their personal “outer limits” for this unusual exhibit. We prompted artists to draw on their childhood memories of such TV shows as “The Outer Limits” and the “Twilight Zone.” Or, a different angle of the same subject could come from more recent obsessions over mysterious white balloons, the colonization of other planets, or the Webb telescope, providing us with mind-boggling celestial glimpses from the beginning of time. Most importantly, we ask artists to question their own personal “outer limits” as creators in this new world where, for example, artificial intelligence is currently challenging our perception of creativity. Regardless of the inspiration, the purpose of this exhibit is to play with the edge and to push the limits and test the outer boundaries.

Michael Hannon's Artist Statement:
My interest in sculpture started with an African Secretary bird made out of coat hangers and cut-up aluminum beer cans, held together with plumbers' solder. Years later while attending California State University at Long Beach I majored in jewelry and metal smithing in the Art Department. From there I worked in the LA Shipyards welding on ships. In 1978 I was hired by Toyota to work in their design studios in Newport Beach. I worked with designers building interior and exterior models of future Toyotas. We were encouraged to experiment with different materials and techniques. I retired from Toyota in 2002. Twenty years later, I still work experimentally, only now I am making sculptures using copper, steel, wood, newspaper, and duct tape. At first, my work was of a figurative nature. Lately, my work has become more abstract.

"Chasing Light": The quality of light in artwork can portray depth, perception, and intensity, as well as more subtle characteristics such as mood and emotion. How light is used – through choice of color, sunlight, and reflection – can bring the champagne softness of an autumnal East Coast landscape or the hardness of a southern California beach day. Or, maybe you “chase” neon light in a modern piece of sculpture or experiment with an LED light box to bring storytelling to your art in an unusual way. How we use light, (and also shadow and the absence of light: darkness) in our work is premeditated and often nuanced. And, it's more difficult to create than it may seem. In this exhibit, we asked artists to submit entries on any platform that reflects their meditation on “chasing” light in their creations.

In this 6-week course, students will learn the art of filling a large sketchbook with images and writing. Dreams, photographs, ideas, and more will be part of the creative process. We will work from prompts (optional) sent out before we start and as we go.
About Instructor: Sarah Pletts paints, writes, instructs, performs and produces dance/theatre for stage and screen. Her career began at 14 in the Miami Ballet Company. Then she went to Pratt Institute in NYC for fine arts and dance. Her visual art is in collections in the U.S. and Europe and she has illustrated for many publications including Scholastic Magazine, Macmillan, and the Audubon Field Guides. Her focus on words and images led to writing and producing an Off-Broadway play, “HENRI’S LETTERS," about the Matisse legacy. Other performances include the RAI2 television in Italy, dancing with Native American tribes, opening the 2002 Olympics, and “TREEtime” in the Teatro National de Nice, France. Her poetry ranked finalist for the Colorado Book Award, and she is currently writing the libretto, “ARTHUR’S MOTHER.” She directs the Sarah Pletts Dance Theatre, Ltd. - a 39-year international non-profit organization. The SPDT receives grants from world-wide organizations i.e. Siemens AG, ABN-AMRO Bank-Monaco, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her creativity is about beauty, cross-cultural issues and man’s interrelationship with Nature.

WORKSHOP: Watercolor Botanical Illustration with Fred Ventura, Ph.D.
WHEN: March 22nd, 2024 (One 2-hour session), 1-3pm

This 2-hour workshop introduces students to the basics of drawing and watercolor painting techniques, mixing colors and color application specific to botanical illustration. This class will emphasize how careful observation of a botanical subject can lead to improved drawings and more accurate paintings.
Students will experience hands-on, step-by-step demonstrations that allow for individual guidance and real-time interactions between the teacher and participants. The goal will be to complete a watercolor painting in the style of a botanical illustrations.
Students will need basic watercolor tools including a set of watercolor paints, 9x12 cold press watercolor paper, a small and medium watercolor brush.

About the Instructor:
Fred creates vibrant, bold and detailed paintings. He uses contrasting colors with precise brush or pen work to create appealing images of natural subjects. In pursuing his artistic goals, he has embraced the use of an iPad with an Apple Pencil. His work also includes traditional watercolor and acrylic paintings, however digital is now his preferred medium. His recent artwork, “Rainforest Rhapsody" exemplifies his style.
Drawing inspiration from the beauty and awesomeness of nature. Fred is a long time Central Coast resident. As an undergraduate he studied painting and drawing at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Fred ultimately earned a master’s degree and doctorate in education from UCSB. He taught in the Conejo Valley and at California Lutheran University. Fred, with his wife Marne, started a software company in 1982 and continue develop educational apps which are sold exclusively by Apple Computer through the App Store.
Through his work, he continues to expand his knowledge and skills in computer graphics and software development. In addition, he collaborates with other local artists through local art groups and by teaching a variety of art classes include watercolor and digital art for the community. Fred admires and his work is influenced by well-known artists such as Henri Rousseau, Wassily Kandinsky, M.C. Escher and Krasnyansky. These artists and others have influenced his artistic journey.

FREE DEMO: Chuck Jennings, M.A., M.F.A. & Photographer - Giclée Photos on Canvas
Chuck has a BA in painting and drawing, and MA and MFA degrees in Fine Art and Design. He began teaching design and color theory at Cal Poly in 1968. He was the Chair of the Department of Art and Design for 14 years before he retired in 2008. He has exhibited his work throughout the U. S. with favorite venues in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Sedona, Arizona. His work is included in the collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
Although for most of his art career he concentrated on painting, he has had a passion for photography since he bought his first single lens reflex camera in 1967. Since 2002, he has devoted all his creative energies to digital photography. He now owns Giclée Print and Photo and ReelEyes Photography.
Chuck has a variety of interests, including classic cars and flying, but he is most well known locally for portraits and event photography, which includes his work with Hospice, CASA, and the League of Women Voters, and his technique of putting photos on canvas. He will be showing his wide-ranging photos, explaining his technique, and discussing his journey to professional artist.

In this course, students will experience step-by-step demonstrations that allow for individual guidance and real-time interactions between the teacher and participants. The goal will be to complete several digital works of art with increasing complexity.
In this workshop, we will use an iPad, an Apple Pencil, and Procreate. This class is appropriate for those with no prior experience and anyone who wishes to improve their skills.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Fred creates vibrant, bold and detailed paintings. He uses contrasting colors with precise brush or pen work to create appealing images of natural subjects. In pursuing his artistic goals, he has embraced the use of an iPad with and Apple Pencil. His work also includes traditional watercolor and acrylic paintings, however digital is now his preferred medium. His recent artwork, “Rainforest Rhapsody” exemplifies his style.
Drawing inspiration from the beauty and awesomeness of nature, Fred is a long time Central Coast resident. As an undergraduate, he studied painting and drawing at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Fred ultimately earned a master’s degree and doctorate in education from UCSB. He taught in the Conejo Valley and at California Lutheran University. Fred, with his wife Marne, started a software company in 1982 and continue to develop educational apps which are sold exclusively by Apple Computer through the App Store.
Through his work, he continues to expand his knowledge and skills in computer graphics and software development. In addition, he collaborates with other local artists through local art groups and by teaching a variety of art classes including watercolor and digital art for the community. Fred admires and his work is influenced by well-known artists such as Henri Rousseau, Wassily Kandinsky, M.C. Escher and Kranyansky. These artists and others have influenced his artistic journey.
Connect with other artists and learn digital art techniques. This workshop is designed for beginners and appropriate for intermediate artists. An iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate App are needed.
