YIN AND YANG
MBAA Member’s Only Exhibit
The “Yin and Yang” exhibit asks artists to explore any stop along the often clashing, contradictory, and/or harmonious spectrum of the Chinese philosophical concept that explores such dichotomies as black-and-white, balance and instability, dark and light, harmony and chaos, and female and male – whatever that means. Yin and Yang, too, is about two seemingly disparate parts of a whole that, once joined, become stronger than when apart. You might decide to experiment just with black-and-white, (or just black or white) or, delve deeper into the Yin/Yang concept of harmony and balance.

Art reflects the times we live in and it is undeniable that we have been living through a uniquely chaotic time these past few years. For many artists, being isolate during the COVID pandemic created a springboard to new material and a new voice. Whether the surrounding “chaos” is political upheaval, homelessness, climate change, sexual identity issues, or women’s rights, artists choose their way to interpret, offer an opinion, soothe, and also express emotion to better help us digest, understand, and even laugh at the world around us.
We are issuing a call to all artists, of all mediums, to forge a show that is wide-ranging and thought-provoking. One that reflects and also helps us understand the times we live in. It is your choice whether you decide to take the chaos head-on in your work or use your artistic sensibilities to be a welcome refuge from the storm.
