The Morro Bay Arts Association proudly presents, The Power Of Red
There is no denying the power of red.
The color symbolizes an undeniable sense of extremes: strength, passion, heat, luck, wealth and confidence. It is the color of universal implications that can range from the red-clad brides of the Ming Dynasty, to the shame of the Scarlet Letter, to the lustful, raging, human heart. A dazzling red sunset can culminate intense energy or add strength to an otherwise calming mood. Red can warm like a fire and signal us of impending danger. It is from nature, perhaps, that the purest form of red can be found, where a simple bowl of fresh strawberries or ripe tomatoes create the dynamic colors that bring energy and inspiration to generations of still life artists, abstract painters and more. And this color, too, can be subtle in its power. Can anyone of a certain age not remember the red-coated little girl of the black-and-white epic Schindler’s List, her presence growing smaller and smaller as she is swept up in a sea of people moving towards their ultimate deaths.
For this exhibit, we urge artists of all mediums and platforms to consider how they take the color red, elevate it, and make it their own. What a still life artist may see in the hues of a perfect apple might be totally different to metal artists or sculptors or glass blowers who consciously embody the color red in an unusual and startling interpretation. Why did you choose red?
And we are asking each artist to share a single adjective which conveys the emotion or tone of how this color red informs his or her piece. We will ask each artist, "In a single word, what does the use of red represent in your artistic creation? Anger? Joy? Foreboding? Realism? Love? Danger?" This single adjective will appear next to each work alongside the artist's name and the entry title.

Who knew that playing with mud pies as a child would lead Melanie Bedwell to throwing porcelain forms on a pottery wheel.
Although she has enjoyed several other artforms, creating pure white or blended color porcelain objects has become her obsession.
“I don’t see myself as a production potter, knocking out quantities of identical pieces. Each time I sit at the wheel with clay I’ve prepared, the experience becomes a conversation and a unique shape emerges, whether it’s large or tiny.”
Melanie’s career path included broadcasting, public relations in several different industries, employee training, firefighting, teaching, mystery writing and massage therapy. She conveys that each of her former endeavors involved engagement and interaction with others. To Melanie, working with clay is simply a new form of communication - a relationship between the potter and raw material.
This year, Melanie plans to give her elegant, marbled agateware or Neriage, a new twist and updated colors!
Whether you are attending this exhibit to observe or to find that perfect artwork for yourself or as a gift, you’re in for a delight. The Power of Red exhibit, featuring the extraordinary, marbled agateware of Melanie Bedwell, will be on display April 6 – May 15, 2023. Meet the artists at the opening reception, Saturday, April 8, 2023 from 2 -4pm. This event is free and open to the public. Art Center Morro Bay is open 12 – 4pm daily.

Carolyn has since studied her craft with many talented artists locally and nationally. Carolyn has been accepted into several juried art exhibits and enjoys participating in the San Luis Obispo County Arts, Open Studio Art Tour.

Rock, Paper, Print is an exhibition of artwork featuring members of the Central Coast Printmakers, a group of around thirty artists who share the love of printmaking.
In this exhibit of individually hand-made prints, there will be a wide variety of styles and printmaking techniques. Printmakers use many different surfaces such as wood, metal, linoleum and plastic, and methods like carving blocks, etching with acid, and painting materials to print, using a large assortment of papers to achieve these images.
Most prints are conceived and made in reverse, so that when the image is transferred to the paper, it will view correctly. The transfer to the paper is accomplished by hand rubbing or with the use of a press.

This exhibit is a non-themed show focusing on selected wood turned artwork. A prospectus containing complete entry dates and rules for this exhibit will be available soon.
The Central Coast Woodturners became a chapter of the American Association of Woodtuners in September 1991. Both organizations are dedicated to advancing the art and craft of woodturning.
Woodturning is the craft of using the wood lathe with hand-held tools to cut a shape that is symmetrical around an axis of rotation. Like the potter’s wheel, the wood lathe is a simple mechanism which can generate a variety of forms limited only by the imagination of the artist or craftsperson.
The Central Coast Woodturners group have a working relationship with the Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation and Beads of Courage supplying lidded bowls and wig trees to both children and seniors dealing with cancer on the Central Coast.
This fascinating exhibit will feature the finest of selected artwork through a jurying process. FEATURED ARTIST - JACK METTIER

Featured Artist – Jack Mettier
Morro Bay Art Association is proud to feature the ceramic pottery of Jack Mettier.
Jack has over 60 years of experience as a ceramicist. He earned a B.A. in Ceramic and M.A. in Art with Ceramics and Glass concentration followed by operating a private Glassblowing Studio in the Santa Cruz mountains. Jack has thirty-five years of experience teaching ceramics, art and jewelry experience. He taught art and ceramics at Paso Robles High School and was the Chairman of the Visual and Performing Arts Department there. At Taft College he taught ceramics and jewelry and was Director of the Art Gallery as well as Chairman of the Fine Arts Department.
After 60 years working with clay and creating various forms of ceramics his current work represents a step in his ever-evolving creative process.
“There is a sense of the undefined, raw mystery in each piece that is created by the development of the very refined, traditional ceramic vessel form, that with my unique firing process has been “assaulted” (reminiscent of the destruction of a culture or a civilization) to create these deceptively simple, unique, one-of-a-kind, functional, artistic vessels.”

The Morro Bay Art Association proudly presents, INSPIRATION.
How does a work of art begin? What germinates the seed and how do we grow it? What motivates us to pick up a paintbrush or visualize a complex idea in a piece of glass? What drives us to bring something intangible – like the feelings of fear or sorrow - to that tangible place where others can experience it, too, and maybe even participate in the artist’s own creative catharsis?
For centuries, masters like Picasso and Monet (and even Warhol, in a more controversial way) have practiced appropriation as inspiration when they reinterpreted the aesthetics of other artists and their work to inspire new and unique masterpieces of their own. What triggers creative inspiration can begin with a spark or connection in viewing the work of another artist. Or it can be something as sensory and unassuming as the smell of rain on the parched Carrizo Plains in California. Or as life changing, still, as the Covid pandemic, or news headlines that overwhelm us daily concerning war, climate change, or the strife in Ukraine.
And, too, it can be the more silent voice from within as we gaze at our reflection in a mirror.
In the exhibit “Inspiration,” we ask artists to take us on a personal journey for what we hope to be an eclectic exhibit that is open to all platforms, mediums and ideas. We also ask that you submit a short statement describing the source of your inspiration that will be displayed alongside your work. While art in general succeeds when it is strong enough to stand on its own, we think viewers will find value and fascination in hearing from the artists in this special exhibit.
Inspiration will be on display from September 21, 2023 through November 6, 2023 and the opening reception is Sunday, September 24, 2023, 2-4pm.
