Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present it’s 3rd Annual Juried Exhibition, a National event.

WHAT: Annual Juried Exhibition
WHEN: September 19 through October 29, 2019
RECEPTION: Sunday, September 22, 2019, 2-4pm
WHERE: Art Center Morro Bay, 835 Main Street, Morro Bay, CA 93442

This juried event is a collective of exceptional paintings spanning the United States. Many of the artists are internationally acclaimed. In addition, MBAA will feature the three dimensional art of Guyla Amyx.

We are fortunate to have award winning artist, Dennis Curry, as the judge for this celebrated event.

Judge of Awards:

Dennis Curry is a professional artist of international fame. Dennis served in the United States Army, 25th Infantry Division’s Combat Artists program in 1966 where he documented combat experiences from an artist’s perspective.

Upon returning to the U.S., Dennis attended Santa Monica College where he learned original printmaking. He traveled to East Africa and co-founded Duma Safaris with a friend and publisher, Christopher Law. This life changing experience afforded him the pleasure of introducing others to the great game areas that forever influenced his love of nature.

Following an introduction to the contemporary printmaking of Mylar Lithography, he founded Blue Berry Press, located in Cambria, CA., later becoming known for his work in the traditional, intaglio mediums of etching and engraving. Later, moving away from printmaking and wildlife, Dennis began working in the more traditional medium of oil painting to capture the light and color of the landscapes on location and in the studio.

Dennis has significantly contributed to conservation work around the world and his graphics are widely collected nationally and internationally.

Dennis relayed, “While much art of the past has dealt with the glories and follies of humankind, I feel a need to portray nature for its own sake with the hope of promoting value and respect for our unique planet and the varied form of life with which we share it.”

Dennis is a current member of Society of Animal Artists, Artists for Conservation and San Luis Outdoor Painters for the Environment.

Guest Artist: During this special event, we are proud to present the ceramic artwork of Guyla Amyx.
Guyla earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Eastern Washington University and a Master of Tine Art degree from Washington University. Guylas was a tenured professor at Cuesta Community College where she taught ceramic art for over 22 years and served eight years as the department chair.
Guyla’s early style of ceramics leaned toward the figurative, using brightly colored surfaces, geometric patterns and shapes. Her approach to working with clay involved a raw and spontaneous quality. Later during her tenure as professor, Guyla explored a renewed interest in the Cone 10 Reduction process that she shared with her students. Much of her work is reflective of this process. Guyla states, “You may see a more refined and meditative quality to my recent creations with carved porcelain and crystalline glazing, reflective of my exploration in yoga and Eastern philosophy.”
This exhibit celebrates the three dimensional work of Guyla Amyx and two dimensional, art work in all media of those artists accepted into this extraordinary exhibit. You will find a variety of subject matter spanning traditional landscape to contemporary and abstract. Whether you are attending this exhibit to observe or to purchase, you are in for a delight! Morro Bay Art Association’s Annual Juried Exhibit will be on display from September 19 through October 29, 2019.
A “meet the artists” opening reception, will be held, Sunday, September 22, 2019, 2-4pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present Perspectives.

This exhibit explores how perspective gives a three-dimensional feeling to a flat surface. Linier perspective creates the illusion of distance to a vanishing point. It’s a system of representing the way objects appear to get smaller and closer together, the farther away they are from the viewer. We see parallel lines as converging in the distance, although in reality they really don’t. Roads and railway lines are obvious examples.
Multiple vanishing points such as a cityscapes, enable a more naturalistic representation.
Atmospheric or aerial perspective, creates the sense of distance by simulating changes affected by color such as blue in a mountain as it meets the sky.
This exhibit celebrates artistic expression in all media to include textile, encaustic, mixed media, oil, watercolor, acrylic and photography. This theme extends itself to anything that represents a variety of perspectives.

Judge of Awards:

W. Truman Hosner will serve as judge of awards during this event.

Born in Detroit, 1950, W. Truman Hosner earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree at Wayne State University and went on to study illustration at The Center for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design in Detroit. During his 17 years as a professional illustrator, his assignments included, among others, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Field and Stream magazine, CBS-Fox Video, and Reader’s Digest. At the peak of a very successful career in commercial art, Hosner re-focused himself and studied under two master painters at the Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona, Harley Brown and Dan Gerhartz. Plein-air fine art painting captured his passion. Over the past two decades he received personal mentoring from Max Altekruse, himself a student of the renowned Frank Reilly of the Art Students League in New York City.

Mr Hosner earned the distinction of Master Pastelist Pastel Society of America, Master Pastelist International Association of Pastel Societies, Maitre Pastelliste Societe de Pastel de L’est du Canada and Distinguished Member, Pastel Society of the West Coast.

Paintings by W. Truman Hosner have been featured in national and international museum collections and exhibitions throughout the USA, Canada, France and Asia.

“During a painting session, everything is always changing, the light is constantly modulating and then my painting slowly evolves, becomes dynamic, it pulsates energy and exuberance.”

Whether you are attending this extraordinary exhibit to observe or to purchase, you are in for a delight! “Pastels USA” will be on display from June 25 through August 2, 2020. The opening artist reception will be held Sunday, June 28, 2-4pn and the closing reception will feature the award ceremony on the last day of this event, Sunday, August 2, 2-4pm.
