Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present Pushing Boundaries: Exploring Abstraction, al National Juried Exhibit.

Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be slight, partial, or complete, as abstraction in art exists along a continuum. Even art that aims for realism of the highest degree can be said to be abstract since perfect representation may be elusive.

We are fortunate to have award winning artist, Krista Harris, as the judge for this celebrated event.

Krista is a professional artist of international fame. Her masterful use of vibrant color evokes energy, strength and simplicity. Her captivating work will lure you in to explore richly layered designs that reveal a deeper place – somewhere pure and personal.

Krista earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from East Carolina University. Krista exhibits in Dallas, Palm Desert, Chicago, Vermont, Telluride, Portland and other fine art galleries across the country. Her work is widely collected in private and corporate collections throughout the world, including Duke Memorial Cancer Center, Durham, NC; Northern Trust Bank, Chicago, IL; and the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Grand Cayman Island.

This exhibit celebrates artistic expression in all media. You will find a variety of subject matter spanning partial to total abstract.

Art Center Morro Bay presents an undefined exhibition on “Social Justice.”

In this remarkable exhibit, artists express their own concepts of human rights, inequality and betrayal.

Throughout history, art has provided a glimpse into social circumstances surrounding daily life. Today’s climate of shifting world powers make social justice is a fertile subject for artist and viewer alike. For this exhibit, artists were invited to define social justice by confronting issues of income disparity, homelessness, health and environmental concerns, immigration, racism and gun violence, to name a few. Its beauty lies in its ability to throw light on our own ignorance.

In the Russell Gallery upstairs, we present Dark Corners, a series of provocative black and white photographs of social conditions by artist Sam Peck. Mr. Peck describes himself as a Buddhist feminist who abhors human suffering. His work is a stark portrayal of the power vacuum in our American culture. As a photographer, Mr. Peck uses his lense to shock and protest the vulnerability of women in a man’s world, where “weapons are metaphors for empowering victims to change the course of events, one way or another.” This exhibit depicts scenes that some viewers may find disturbing and is not suitable for children.

Martin Luther King, Jr. preached that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Don’t miss these creative works that aim to raise public consciousness, build community and promote social change.

“Social Justice” is on display from September 21 through October 30, 2017. Meet the artists at the opening reception Sunday, September 24, 2pm-4pm. This event is free and open to the public. Art Center Morro Bay is open from 12pm – 4pm daily.
