April 8 – May 24, 2021.

Art Center Morro Bay is proud to present, Broken Nature.

While we grapple with a worldwide pandemic, the effects of global warming, drought, fire, climate change, divisions, hidden agendas, distorted realities, extinction and polluted oceans are all on the rise.

Will we find holistic approaches to leave behind an earth busting with life for our ancestors or one eerily devoid of activity? Can we mend the divides in our broken society or find strategies to unbreak the cycle to heal ourselves and the planet? Can we un-break and re-wild the nature and ourselves?

Art has the ability to communicate the complexities of socioeconomic, political and environmental issues in a way that is loud and unyielding in its resolve. This exhibit addresses consequences and the urgent need to live sustainably within the earth’s finite resources.

In celebration of Earth Day, April 22, 2021.

This exhibit celebrates artistic expression in all media to include textile, encaustic, mixed media, oil, watercolor, acrylic and photography. This event is free and open to the public. Art Center Morro Bay is open Thursday through Monday, 12pm – 4pm daily.

Art Center Morro Bay is happy to feature the pottery of Jim and Sandy Gregory.

Jim fell in love with pottery while attending grad school at Western Oregon State University in 1975.

After finishing college, Jim began his teaching career. He taught pottery at Reedley High School (33 years) and Reedley Jr. College (26 years) as an adjunct faculty member.

We always had a small pottery business, doing some shows and taking special orders. Sandy was a behind the scenes helper in their business.

Jim specializes in functional stoneware, raku and horse hair. He loves making and firing decorative raku, as each piece is unique. Raku is a firing technique that was developed in Japan in the early 1500’s. Jim’s horsehair pieces have also become a very popular item. It is also a firing technique where a strand of horse hair is applied to piece while it is still hot allowing the hair to burn into the clay body and creating a very southwest look to each piece. Horse Hair pottery was developed by the southwest native Indians.

Sandy is also a retired teacher. Since retiring she has developed her own line of functional stoneware, yard totems and birdhouses.

Both Jim and Sandy love making new and exciting clay pieces.

July 15, 2021 - September 6, 2021

In conjunction to The Great Outdoors exhibit, Art Center Morro Bay is please to present the beautiful wood turned art of Larry K. Truesdale.

There has always been a passion inside of Larry as it pertains enjoying the beauty of the internal grains of various species of woods, and a vision of what a piece of wood could ultimately become to expose its inner beauty. His experience in the scientific community, focusing on drug discovery, gave him the ability to look beyond the ordinary and create something extraordinary. After retiring in 2011 from a career in drug discovery research, he decided to learn more about the various woods growing across the globe, research and define how best he could enhance Mother Nature’s Wonderful Pallet, hence the name for his new focus…”Woods of the World, Mother Nature’s Pallet” was created.

With each creative idea comes a vision. Larry has the ability to convert that vision into a new product thereby revealing the inner beauty of the wood through its grain, which tells a story of the tree’s growth challenges. Whether it is a tree trunk or a small piece of wood from a tree, he will ultimately convert it to a unique piece of art that is more beautiful than the original piece. To him this process is similar to reacting molecules to create unusual 3-D structures to enhance their biological properties to make useful medicines for mankind.

For Larry, the experience of looking at a tree or a cut block of its wood is truly amazing. He envisions the inner potential and beauty within waiting to be revealed, and then brings new life to that piece of wood.

Larry creates unique three dimensional artworks that are not only beautiful, but also practical.

The Great Outdoors, featuring wood turned artwork of Larry K. Truesdale will be on display from July 15, 2021 through September 6, 2021. This event is free and open to the public. Art Center Morro Bay is open from 12pm – 4pm daily, except Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

VISIONARY HUMAN / toMORROws SCULPTURE

RECEPTION: Sunday, September 12, 2-4pm (Pending Covid Restricitions)

This pandemic provides an opportunity to break with the past, reconcile with current injustices and imagine a world anew.

We are at the crossroads. Turning away from yesterday, we’re leaping forward into a new future.

As we transition from current habitual concepts and a fabricated persona, we shed the past and pivot into a renewed spirit and sense of vision.

Visionary Human gives rise to questions of survival and demonstrates how art continually pushes us to reimagine our existence.

During this exhibit, artists have been encouraged to draw from centuries-old practices while imbuing them with fresh perspectives to examine issues bubbling up in today’s volatile cultural and environmental climate while constructing their version of reality and self.

You’ll find a wide scope of two and three dimensional art, including paintings, photography, mixed media, jewelry and extraordinary sculptures by Central Coast Sculptors in their simultaneous exhibit, toMORROws Sculpture.

Whether you are attending this extraordinary exhibit to observe or to purchase, you are in for a delight! Visionary Human and toMORROws Sculpture will be on display from September 9 through November 1, 2021. The opening artist reception for these concurrent exhibits is scheduled for Sunday, September 12, 2-4pm. The public is invited to this free event.
