Windows to Other Worlds: Cultural Explorations

Art Center Morro Bay proudly presents Windows to Other Worlds: Cultural Explorations, an exhibit that celebrates worldwide travel, heritage and cultural experiences.

Inspired by a recent trip to Rajasthan, Northern India, award-winning artist Flo Bartell and fellow artists, pay tribute to artwork, customs and the people of various countries around the world.

Flo said about the group’s experiences, “We visited paper mills, fabric making and printing factories. We learned wood block printing on fabric and made our own blocks. We took a workshop in miniature painting and received instruction in hand stitching journals. We watched skilled leather artisans and jewelry makers as they worked.”

Although the inspiration began with a group of artists’ recent trip to India, this exhibit is open to all artists who wish to share and exhibit two and three dimensional works, that reflect other cultures during their own travels or experiences into other worlds.

Expect to see a variety of subjects, colors and mediums, including fiber, jewelry, painting, photography, sculpture and more!

Windows to Other Worlds: Cultural Explorations will be on display from February 22 through April 2, 2018. Meet the artists at the opening reception Sunday, February 25, 2pm – 4pm. This event is free and open to the public. Art Center Morro Bay is open from 12pm – 4pm daily.

Art Reception May 20, 2018, 2-4pm
FREE and Open to the Public

The Painters Group of the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is proud to present the spellbinding art exhibit, “Brushstrokes 2018” hosted by Art Center Morro Bay. This annual juried event is a collective of exceptional paintings, featuring some of the finest artworks from artists throughout California. The exhibit shows a variety of artistic mediums from traditional to contemporary.

The juror, Peter Charles, earned a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree at Rhode Island School of Design and Master of Fine Art from Yale University School of Art & Architecture. He worked as one of two Head Pages in the U.S. Senate and is an Emeritus Professor of Art at Georgetown University, where he taught sculpture and foundation design in the Art and Art History Departments. In July, 2015, Peter moved from Washington, DC, to San Luis Obispo, CA. As a sculptor and painter, he generally works with steel and wood.

Peter states, “My aesthetic is idiosyncratic. I think my graphic sensibility dominates my work. The common thread is a synergism between two and three dimensions and color. I use elements from nature. I alter, distort and abstract shapes to emphasize their essential character. I admire and share the sensibilities of many modern masters. Mondrian for composition and simple color. Klee and Kandinsky for wedding geometry and nature. Noguchi for purity of form and sensual materials, Giacometti for mystery and monumentality, and David Smith for toughness. I’ve coined my work lyrical constructivism.”

Whether you are attending this extraordinary exhibit to observe or to purchase, you are in for a delight! “Brushstrokes” will be on display from May 17 through June 25, 2018. The opening reception will be Sunday, May 20, 2pm-4pm. This event is free and open to the public. Art Center Morro Bay is open from 12pm – 4pm daily.
